Marie Crowe
Marie Crowe
Marie Crowe is a sports journalist and broadcaster from Ireland. She has been able to add her passion for sports into her career.
Early Life
From an early age, Marie has been heavily involved with sports.
Growing up, her father was an international runner and sports fanatic who brought her and her six siblings to every sports event in Ireland.
This included training, matches, horse racing, Irish Open, and rugby internationals. He also encouraged his children to make bets on whatever sporting event was being televised.
In her school years, Marie played football for Lifford Ladies in Ennis.
Career
Marie has worked in print, radio and television.
In Irish spots media, she is one of the most recognizable female faces and voices alongside Jacqui Hurley and Máire Treasa Ní Dhubhghaill.
Marie started in radio and is thankful to Marty Morrissey who helped her make her demo for Clare FM and get her foot in the door in a male dominant profession.
As a sports journalist, Marie has been writing a column for Sunday Independent (Ireland) since 2008 and for six years, Marie was the anchor broadcaster for Setanta Sport (now Eir Sport). She mentions that live broadcasting, although terrifying, makes her feel alive.
Marie was also a sports reporter for UTV Ireland from 2014 to 2017.
As of early 2017, she is the Republic of Ireland Correspondent for UEFA.
In the future, Marie hopes to present and work on more live sport while continuing to write her column, something she loves doing.
A Woman in a Male-Dominated Profession Since she is a woman, Marie realized it was difficult to gain initial credibility discussing men's sports. Although she wished to support sportswomen, she didn't want to confine herself to solely writing about women's sports. She denied appearances on radio shows unless they included her on a regular basis and discussed the athletics and football she wrote about weekly, rather than the latest female athletic scandal.
Marie is glad that there is now an abundance of women broadcasting on television and radio but would like to see more women in print sports journalism as there is currently so few.
Personal Life
In 2013, Marie married Gaelic football player Billy Sheehan in County Clare. Connecting over their love of sport, the wedding was sports-themed with guests compromised of current and former inter-county footballers and sports journalists. Marie has three children with her husband, one named after her brother Timmy who is an international runner.
Continuing to cultivate her passion for football from her early years, Marie played for St Patricks Athletic when she moved to Dublin up until she had her last last baby.
Marie is interested in creating sports-related documentaries, including the recently aired "Podge Collins: My Toughest Year.”
She is very active on Twitter and uses her account as a means of conveying sports news and staying connected with her followers.
She has even been mentioned by SportsNews Ireland as one of the top 5 Irish sports journalists to follow on Twitter.
Marie was a speaker at Huddle Dublin, a yearly event at which some of the best performers in sport share their success stories with the intent to inspire. [1]

She was awarded the MacNamee Award winner in 2015 for recognition of outstanding contributions in the area of media and communications. This emotional article focuses in on Austin Stacks' journey, her husband's former football club.
