Marica Kosanović

Marica Kosanović

Marica Kosanović (1858 - 1938) was sister of famous inventor Nikola Tesla and mother of Croatian politician and Yugoslav diplomat Sava Kosanović.

She was born in the village of Smiljan in Lika region. Her father was Serbian Orthodox priest Milutin Tesla and his wife Georgina "Đuka" Mandić. She was the youngest of five children.

She married Nikola (Nikoladin) Kosanović, Serbian Orthodox priest from Plaški. She bore him four sons - Ljubiša Kosanović, an officer in Austro-Hungarian Army; Ljubiša, an economist; Milutin (1890 - 1941), a physician and Sava, who later led career in politics and diplomacy.

She never had any formal education, but unlike her illiterate mother, she was voracious reader and self-erudite, which was rarity for Lika women at her time. She spoke French, German, Italian and Czech fluently and even occasionally wrote articles for newspapers in Zagreb and Budapest.

It is believed that she was Nikola Tesla's favourite relative and they held correspondence till the end of Marica's life.

She died in Zagreb sanatorium.
