Manuel Bronstein

Manuel Bronstein leads Product Management at YouTube overseeing YouTube's mobile, desktop and living room applications, as well as Live, Growth and Community.

Formerly Sr. Director of Product at Zynga where he led the product team for FarmVille.

Before joining Zynga, Manuel was Director of Social Interactive Entertainment at Xbox Live, leading strategy, portfolio and business management for the Video & Music business, Applications, and New Interactive Entertainment Experiences for Xbox, including Netflix, LastFM, Facebook, Twitter and ESPN.

Prior to this role Bronstein launched “1 vs 100” on Xbox LIVE.

Previously, Manuel's teams were responsible for the launch of YouTube Kids, YouTube Music and YouTube Games.

Education

Bronstein studied electronic engineering at the Simón Bolívar University in Caracas and, after working for a few years at the multinational Procter & Gamble, moved to New York in 2000 to work in a start-up.

A year later, he began his studies at the University of California at Berkeley pursuing a master's degree in business administration (MBA) in marketing, technology and product development.

"I always liked the creative part of developing a new product, looking for new ideas, having the opportunity to grasp those ideas and create a new product, a new business," he says about his choice .

Career

As soon as he finished his master's degree, Bronstein realized that many of his Hispanic friends were evaluating the decision to stay in the United States or return to their respective countries.

He decided to stay for the professional opportunities that this country offered him.

Those opportunities materialized with a job in Microsoft's

Xbox division, in Seattle, in 2003. "It

was two years before we launched the Xbox 360 console. I

had the opportunity to work on the process of creating a new product, which was very fun and at the same time has been very successful," he recalls.

After seven years at Microsoft, Bronstein admits that he wanted to return to California, a state that is ideal for him to share new ideas and socialize new products and companies.

"Even though Microsoft was an incredible and very unique experience, I was always thinking: 'At some point I'm going back,' but I wanted to find the right opportunity, I had that opportunity in 2010 and here we are."

That opportunity materialized in Zynga, where he collaborated in the development of social games as vice president of product.

In November 2014, just over four years after moving to California, he started working as a product vice president on YouTube.

His career on Youtube

But what exactly is the product management to which Bronstein has dedicated his career?

"It is a superinteresting discipline because it is responsible - working together with the engineering teams and design teams - to formulate product strategies," he explains.

Those strategies have to do with making a product that delights users, but one that also helps achieve business objectives.

One of the things that this executive has learned throughout his career is the importance of being part of a company where you feel you have an interesting mission.

"Do not feel that what you are doing is only create a better product, but in some way or another contribute your grain of sand, make the world better," he says.

In this sense, he reflects on the fact that television is a unidirectional channel channel, but YouTube is, in reality, a community of creators and spectators who can comment on the contents.

This is where your team is very focused: to improve communication- and interaction - between content creators and viewers, to facilitate that round-trip communication where the creator speaks and the viewer sees and responds.

For Bronstein, the television medium is evolving in a more participatory manner.

"I think the video will become more interactive, more social, even more live," he explains.

Personal life and interests

Manuel lives in Palo Alto with his family.

He has a wife and two sons.

In addition to being subscribed to channels like MinutePhysics that explain physical concepts in a few minutes, he says he enjoys the YouTube sports channels a lot and, like a good fan of the Venezuelan national team, watching football videos.
