Mamoudou Gassama is a Malian man who resides in the city of Paris. [1] He is a migrant who was given French citizenship after rescuing a toddler in Rue Marx-Dormoy who dangled from a balcony to his death. Gassama was born in the country of Mali and grew up under dire circumstances. Throughout his life he struggled to find a home and moved around different places while attempting to connect with his family in Europe.
In order to connect with some of his family members in Europe and to find a better life, he journeyed for years throughout the Northern African region.
He traveled and lived in places such as Burkina Faso, Niger and Libya. [undefined]
He would thereafter go on to make the dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossing to Italy where he arrived in 2014 after living more than a year in Libya. During his time in Libya, he faced constant abuse - he was arrested an beaten. [undefined]
In 2017, he decided to finally make his way into France to reconnect with his uncle. [undefined]

On Saturday afternoon, May 26th, 2018, Gassama was out in the streets of
18th arrondissement watching the Champions League match in a local restaurant when he saw the commotion unfold. [undefined] [undefined] People outside watched as a four year-old who dangled from a balcony and about to fall to its death. [undefined] [undefined]
Shaken by what he saw, Gassama decided to climb the building from the outside to reach the child.
He climbed up five floors, from balcony to balcony, and whisked the four-year-old boy to safety as a crowd screamed at the foot of the building.
The crowd began to praise Gassama as a hero and as "Le Spiderman of the 18th".
On Monday, he was given the certificate of courage and dedication signed by Paris Police Prefect Michel Delpuech.
Citizenship and Employment
Emmanuel Macron also gave the Mali native his citizenship for his efforts in saving a neglected toddler. He has since become a Firefighter for Paris fire brigade. [undefined]
