On Monday, April 11, 2022 around 1 p.m., Maija Nenonen left her townhouse apartment at 974 Western Road in London, Ontario.
As she was walking to campus to study for her final exams, she stepped into the small parking lot outside the three-story apartment building.[2]
Maija walked into the path of the truck and was hit.
The collision knocked Maija down onto the parking lot, where she was caught on the truck's undercarriage.
The truck continued driving in reverse, dragging Maija approximately six meters across the pavement.
The rear tires rolled over Maija's upper body, fatally crushing her.[1] [17][18]
Another witness told investigators that Maija walked into the truck's blind spot as it was backing up, and it was impossible for the driver to notice her.
"She fell down and was immediately caught under the wheels.
The girl was screaming, the but the driver couldn't hear her," the witness said.[17][18]
Bystanders tried to alert the truck's driver, but there was not enough time to react before Maija was fatally injured.
A man at the scene told investigators: "I looked over and saw the truck rolling over a girl that was laying on the ground.
Before I could do anything, her blood was spraying out.
A resident, Liam Jackson, said he looked out his window and saw the landscaping truck and trailer parked in the parking lot, with the driver-side door wide open.[1] A few feet from the truck, Maija's body was lying on the pavement in a pool of blood.
"She was barely moving and was bleeding a lot," Jackson said.[7]
At about 1:15 p.m., police arrived on the scene and found Maija lying in the parking lot "with a very weak pulse, suffering from multiple traumatic injuries," a police spokesman said.
"We determined the victim's injuries were unfortunately not survivable," the spokesman said.[1]
Police covered the fatally injured girl with a plastic tarp as the collision reconstruction unit arrived on the scene.[7] Maija Nenonen was declared dead at the scene around 2 p.m.[4] Her body lay covered by the plastic tarp on the ground in the parking lot for several hours before being removed.[1]
Maija Nenonen was buried on April 20, 2022 at St. Gregory’s Church in Sault Sainte Marie.[4]
Investigation
An investigation into the death of Maija Nenonen was concluded in July 2022.
No charges were laid against the truck's driver, after the investigation found him not at fault for killing Maija.
The investigation concluded that Maija was wholly responsible for her own accidental death.
"A thorough investigation was completed into this tragic incident, and has concluded with no charges laid," police spokesperson Kyrsten Harris told local media.[17][18]
