Machida Karate
Machida Karate
Machida Karate is a style of Karate developed by Japanese 8 th Dan Shotokan Karate Sensei, Yoshizo Machida.
While Machida Karate is derived from Shotokan Karate it is more focused on being a "dynamic and effective method of training that is practical for self-defense."
Yoshizo Machida describes the current state of Karate, especially Shotokan Karate, as having lost its effectiveness as a real world self-defense style that can be applied in practical real life scenarios.
He believes Karate is currently focused on competition and "point-based sportive tournaments."
Yoshizo Machida and his sons Lyoto Machida, Chinzo Machida, and Take Machida promote and teach Machida Karate through their Academia Machida based in Belém, Pará, Brazil.
[2]The Machida Karate Academy is based in Lomita, California.
Characteristics
Machida Karate utilizes all known traditional Karate techniques such as punches, knees, kicks, and elbows but the style also utilizes takedowns and submissions.
This also makes Machida Karate more suitable to modern day Mixed martial arts competitions.
Rise in popularity
Lyoto Machida's success in the Ultimate Fighting Championship established Machida Karate as a modern Karate art.
