Zhang attended Peking University and was awarded two Bachelor's degrees in Business administration and management and international politicaleconomics.

She later attended Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Governmentand graduated with a Master's degree in public policy.

Zhang worked in various positions including Director of Delegate Liason for the United Nations Asian International Model and as a course and research assistant in Beijing.

She was also Vice President of Social Affairs for Harvard Kennedy School China Society between 2015 and 2016.
