Layla Raines (2002-May 31, 2017) was a 15-year-old student at Shakamak Junior-Senior High School from Jasonville, Indiana. She was known as a beautiful, shy, kind, smart, and artistic person by friends and family.

Vigil held in Layla Raines memory at Shakamak High School’s gymnasium
Many friends remember Layla Raines for her kindness.
“Layla was the most down-to-earth person,” said Kayla Betts.
“She was always shy, but once you really got to know her, she came out of her shell.
She was always a shoulder to cry on and one person nobody ever had a problem with.”
Another friend, Adam Slater, said “She was so nice and she could brighten up anyone’s day.”
On May 31, 2017 at 7 p.m a vigil was held for Layla at Shakamak High School’s gymnasium.
Many mourners came to the vigil with one attendee saying the gym was filled.
“I got there at 7:01.
I walked in and it was completely silent.
You could hear a pin drop, even after the prayer it was completely silent,” he said.
“Besides the prayer, no one really talked.
It was mostly crying and silence.”
Death
On May 31, 2017 Layla was fatally struck by a car while retrieving a ball.
The crash happened in front of a home on State Road 246 just west of SR 159 in Clay County, Indiana.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding the incident at 12:38 p.m.
When deputies arrived, they learned 39-year-old Stephen Agee was driving a maroon Nissan Quest van eastbound when Layla Raines went into his path. Layla was a visiting a friend a the home where the crash happened.
Layla was hit by the right front of the van, causing traumatic injuries.
She was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital, where she later died.
The crash is being investigated by Indiana State Police Detective Michael Featherling. The investigation is ongoing and officers say drugs and or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
