On Thursday, May 3, 2018 Lauren Emily Pearson was charged with filing a false police report in reference to a Coker College student’s arrest the previous weekend for allegedly raping her in the bathroom of the school's dorm.
Pearson was booked into the W.Glenn Campbell Detention Center Darlington County, South Carolina at 7:20 p.m. Thursday night for filing the false report.
Hartsville Police Lt. Mark Blair indicated Pearson allegedly lied about the sexual assault that led to the arrest of 19-year-old Cesar Antonio Lopez, who was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping.
A police report says Lauren Emily Pearson failed a polygraph and eventually admitted that she made up rape allegations against the 19-year-old.
Jail records indicate Lopez was released Wednesday, May 2, 2018 on a $100,000 bond.
Hartsville City Manager Natalie Zeigler said late Friday that the police department is going through the process of dropping the changes against Lopez.
“Apparently there are several steps they have to go through, so it takes a little time,” Zeigler said.
“From the onset, Mr. Lopez vehemently denied he had committed any crime,” Lopez’s attorney Paul V. Cannarella said in a press release issued Friday.
“He and his family were devastated by the allegations.
He advised me that he and supposed victim did in fact have consensual sex in a dorm bathroom.
When interviewed, he readily admitted to the police this same version of events.”
Lopez has been reinstated at Coker College and placed back on the school's soccer team.
