La bruja (song)
Lyrics and versions
Like other traditional Veracruz songs, their lyrics have been modified over time and enriched with additions and improvisations.
It is sung in the first person, changing from the perspective of the "victim" or "witch".
Its lyrics are jocular and picaresque, handling the double meaning between the theme of witchcraft and that of seduction or courtship.
There are different versions, given the nature of its genre, since in the song jarocho improvisations are very traditional, adding or removing words from more than one verse or couplet.[2]
Cultural reasons
The traditional song "The Witch" uses this symbol in a humourous way to connote the unusual, in the time of old, of the courtship by a lady.
In this way, he can recreate the interpretation of the symbol "witch" as a weighting of "the different" or "the other", and in some way as acceptance and even rejoicing before the difference or novelty.
Like its authorship, its date of creation is also unknown, but it is known that it is one of the oldest Jarocho sounds and part of the syncretism between the symbols of the old and new world.[3]
