Thomas was set to help his girlfriend move to her dormitory at East Carolina University in late August 2016.

On August 7, 2016 Thomas was fatally shot by Chad Copley in Raleigh, North Carolina.

^[1]The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday August 7, 2016 when Thomas was attending a party.

Chad Copley had made a dispatch call prior to the fatal shooting.

^{[1] [4]}Copley told the dispatcher that there were a “bunch of hoodlums” outside.

He told the dispatcher he was “locked and loaded” and was going to “secure his neighborhood.”

Copley fired at Thomas from inside the garage, shooting through a window.

Thomas was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Thomas' family have set up a Go Fund Me to help with his funeral.

The shooting has drawn comparisons to the 2012 killing of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida.
