Controversy
COVID-19 Criticism
April 2020
In April 2020, Kelly Dodd took to her Instagram to apologize after making insensitive comments about the COVID-19 pandemic.
In now-deleted comments on her Instagram she called the outbreak 'God's way of thinning the herd.' She was responding to critics who asked why she was flying from New York to LA at such a time after she posted photos from the empty airport and plane.
'If it's dangerous why are the airlines still flying?
You think I want to fly?
I had to get back, how is that elitist?' Kelly snapped back.[20][21]
In a separate comment, she then claimed the people who have fallen victim to COVID-19 'would have died this year they were compromised.' 'Do you know how many people died from the H1N1, the swine flu or SARS?' she wrote.
'It's 25% get your facts straight you only hearing numbers not the reality!
Realizing how controversial her words were, Kelly later apologized In a selfie video, claiming her words were taken the wrong way.
'I want to give a public apology.
When I wrote this is 'God's way of thinning the herd,' that's not what I meant,' she said.
'What I meant was, do these pandemics happen because it's God’s way?
I'm not God, I'm not insensitive.
I feel bad for all the families who have lost loved ones.
And I do think we should all stay home and protect everybody.
That's not what I meant, and I want to apologize to anybody who got offended.
September 2020
In September 2020, Dodd was called out by followers, after she complained about wearing a mask in a restaurant.
"Putting on a mask to walk ten feet through a restaurant and then taking it off when I get to my table is one of the dumbest things I've done in my entire life and I've done a lot of dumb things," she posted to Instagram.
Kelly, who previously called coronavirus "God's way of thinning the herd," was told to "use her brain," by disgruntled fans.
"Always been a fan of you but this is NOT the post to make in the middle of a pandemic... you have a platform Kelly.. use your brain," wrote one.[22]
COVID-19 Testing
In October 2020, Dodd shared on her Instagram story that she, her new husband Rick Leventhal, and her daughter Jolie Dodd were all suffering from a cold as they left Napa, California after their wedding. A few days afterward, she did a COVID-19 test and tested negative for coronavirus. She shared the negative test results on Instagram. “Results are in …it's negative,” she shared. “I wish I was hanging out with my fellow cast members. But I’m hanging out with my husband and daughter. Watching the season premiere #rhoc.” [27][28]
Racism Allegations
In June 2020, Dodd came under fire amid the Black Lives Matter movement for past comments she made on TMZ about black men.
In a resurfaced clip from 2016, she said, "I don’t like black guys.
I don’t even know any black guys."
[12] Dodd later declared on Instagram that she was "going to stop arguing with people on my social media."
One follower commented on the post, writing, "But like, do you truly believe that bc 'you're Mexican you can't be racist'?" to which Dodd responded, "I've experienced racism personally...
I'm a woman of color and love everyone!" [13]
In 2016 when the clip first went viral, Dodd apologized for the TMZ incident, saying, "I am truly embarrassed.
There is no excuse for bad behavior or comments that offend anyone.
That video does not represent who I really am and I apologize for acting irresponsibly."[14]
Bridal Shower Backlash
In October 2020, Dodd faced backlash for sharing a photo of herself on social media wearing a “Drunk Wives Matter” hat at her "amazing bridal shower!!" The hat - a riff on the Black Lives Matter movement - was reportedly given to Dodd as a shower gift.
On October 6, Dodd posted a brief explanation of the hat on Instagram. "Over the weekend at my bridal shower I got lots of gifts and briefly displayed them," she wrote. "One was a hat with a play on words since I'm about to be a wife, I'm on a Housewives TV show and might be drunk once in a while." The original post was "not intended to offend," she continued, "or make any kind of statement," adding "Of course I support black lives and racial equality."[23]
