Julia Salevan

Julia Salevan

Julia Salevan is a physicist who works as a research analyst in the Yale office of Institutional research.

They are currently interested in the granular and fluid dynamics of erosion. [2]

Education

Salevan received their Bachelors of Science in Physics from University of Maryland in 2012. In 2010, they wrote a publication titled Fast Physical Random Number Generator Using Amplified Spontaneous Emission [10] in which they create a random number generator that employs only “commonly available telecommunications-grade fiber optic components” as opposed to other more complicated methods. In 2012, they also wrote another publication about granular triboelectric charging in sand and glass. [9]

Salevan then went on to receive their M.S. and M.Phil from Yale University in 2015.

In 2017, they also received their Ph.D. for mechanical engineering from Yale University.

Career and Research

In Salevan’s undergraduate, they worked in a variety of research opportunities.

In 2009, they started at the University of Delaware, where they examined quantum spin relaxation under static.

They continued on to be an undergraduate research assistant at the University of Maryland and Bucknell University between June 2010 and August 2011.

[6]

Salevan started work as a graduate teaching fellow at Yale in September 2013, where they taught MENG361a, which was a lecture course for mechanical engineering majors.

[6]

In order to receive their Ph.D.,

Salevan continued on to become a graduate research assistant. In

their research, they focused on the experimental study of erosion of granular matter due to turbulent fluid flow. By

being able to extract high-quality velocity field data and analyze the velocity distribution of fluid and sand grains, Salevan discovered a new method of determining the beginning of riverbed erosion within experimental turbulent model systems. [6]

Personal Life

**** Salevan considers themselves an activist in the LGBTQ+ community.

[7]They identify as non-binary and prefer the pronouns they/them. [7]A message that Salevan would like to give to the broader physics community to better support LGBTQ+ physicists would be:

“I think it's important for queer people in physics to know to whom they can safely talk about it. The physics community is majority heterosexual male, and it would be helpful if people assumed less about their peers.” [7]

They helped to create APS Ad-Hoc Committee on LGBT Issues in Physics and are also active in trans-inclusive groups for women in STEM groups.

They are also a board member in Women in Science at Yale, which "brings together hundreds of scientists across campus with monthly events and boasts an over-200-member, three-level mentoring program."

[4]

Additionally, Salevan also makes laser-cut jewelry inspired by nature and sells their creations on Etsy.
