Josie Duffy Rice is currently the president of The Appeal, a news publication publishing original journalism about the criminal justice system. [2] She is a Journalist, essayist and Lawyer focused on prosecutors, prisons, and other criminal justice issues and is also the co-host of the podcast ''Justice in America'' which began its third season in fall of 2019 along with Clint Smith.
Experience
Josie has focused on criminal justice reform for ten years.
In that time, she’s worked for some of the leading reform organizations including The Bronx Defenders, Advancement Project, the Center for Court Innovation, the Center for Popular Democracy, and the Justice Collaborative. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Slate, The Atlantic, The nation, Scalawag, and more.
She is a former staff attorney at the Center for Popular Democracy where she worked on local voting rights and criminal justice policy.[4]
She was previously a senior strategist at The Justice Collaborative.
In 2015, she was a staff writer at Daily Kos, where she covered prosecutors and criminal justice.
She is also the co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Seven Scribes, a website that featured essays, fiction, interviews, investigative journalism, and cultural analysis by young writers of color.
Education
Graduate of Harvard Law School
Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University.
She is a a 2019 Type Media Fellow, a 2019 Civic Media Fellow, a 2020 New America Fellow, and a 2020 Type Media Fellow at University of Southern California’s Annenberg Innovation Lab.[5]
