Jose Gilbert 'Gil' Vega was a member of the Palm Springs Police Department. In 2013, Vega had been named Patrol Operations Officer of the Year by the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce Peace Officer and Public Safety Awards. ^[1]

On October 8th of 2016 in the early afternoon, Vega, Lesley Zerebny, and another were responding to a domestic disturbance at a house on the 2700 block of Cyprus Road in Palm Springs, California. John Hernandez Felix opened fire on the officers, and the two parties exchanged gunfire with each other. At the end of it, both Vega and Zerebny died from gunshot wounds received from the incident. The other officer was injured in the incident.

Vega was a 35-year veteran of the force who was scheduled to retire in December.
