In October 2017, Langendorf was the hero who stopped gunman Devin Kelley in the course of his shooting rampage at the First Baptist Church (Sutherland Springs, Texas).

Langendorf passed by the scene of the Sutherland Springs Church Shooting when a man from the community informed Langendorf of the shooting.

Langendorf and the unnamed man, who he had just met, were both armed with rifles, chased Devin Kelley down in his truck.

After pursuing Devin Kelley at over 100mph (160kmh) through traffic, Devin Kelley finally spun out of control and off the road.

Langendorf and the other man approached Devin with their guns drawn and held him at gunpoint for 5-7 minutes before Police apprehended Devin. ^[1]

Many have lauded Johnnie for his courage and ability to act under pressure.

This instance of Civilian arrest was cited as "the perfect example of why our 2nd Amendment Rights are vital and need to be protected". Others made comments such as "Well done, Johnnie! You’re a true patriot and a hero. Thank you for coming to the aid of those in need, at such a terrible time.”
