Growing up as a child in the 1930s and 1940s, he grew up having an authoritative and autocratic father who had a harsh tradition in disciplining.
Because of the intensity of the disciplinary practices of his father, he developed the idea that the best way to reach and talk to children is by scaring them.
Career
Jim became a school teacher in the 1950s where he indeed used tactics of intimidation on his students to get them to do their homework, but he realized that it didn't last very long.
On one occasion, during the 1960s, he had a student with a condition called, Reactive attachment disorder, and had failed him most of the year. The two had an altercation and Jim slapped him across the face causing the kid to bleed. Thankfully, because of his friendship with the mother, and because it was a different era, he was not fired from his job.
After that experience, Jim sought out to become an expert in dealing with children, especially those in his school.
He would read and study anything that was recommended or got his hands on.
Becoming an expert in the field of children psychology, education, and discipline, led becoming the principal of the school he taught.
Jim has since 30 years of experience in education, serving in public, private and parochial schools in a variety of roles including elementary education, art and music teacher, school principal and administrator.
