La Gracia Fruteria
Facebook user expressing their disdain for Jenny Niezgoda's choice to open up a store in her neighborhood.
** On October 24th, 2017, Jenny launched her Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for her Frutería locale idea in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego. Her aim for the Mexican style business "is to build a plant-based cafe that nourishes community, conversation, respect, positive thinking and togetherness."
Criticism of La Gracia Fruteria
Facebook user showing disdain over Jenny Niezgoda's attempt for gentrifying a historically Chicano neighborhood. The user shares a post by Gustavo Arellano.
On the kickstarter campaign she also released a video in which she Flaneurs freely through various parts of Barrio Logan. She poses in front of murals of Frida Kahlo and Cesar Chavez while Latin-sounding guitar plays in the background - and at one point the camera movement captures a flip of her hair as the voiceover of Jenny claims that she has found her calling in San Diego after falling in love with Mexico. Instantly, the community did not take well to the lack of sensitivity that Jenny displays in regards to the actual history of the neighborhood, simply showcasing glimpses that natives felt is Cultural appropriation.
Businesses in the last few years around the neighborhood have driven the rent prices to
increase as an influx of newcomers that don’t fit the long-standing ethnic make-up of the community continue to overtake the town.
