On Saturday February 24, 2018, Yao was arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed to death a 22-year-old woman, Deane Stryker, and injured another 77-year-old man who intervened. ^{[undefined] [undefined]}

Winchester police received several 911 calls at about 10:38 a.m. reporting a stabbing at the Winchester Library.

It has since been closed indefinitely pending investigations.

Stryker had been seated at a table in a reading room off the library’s main lobby apparently studying or doing work, when Yao allegedly approached her from behind.
