Janet Mejia was a Mexican-American college graduate of California State University, Sacramento. ^{[0] [6]}

Mejia grew up in Stockton, California and graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a degree in American Sign Language and deaf studies in 2016. ^[0]

On April 13, 2017, police found Mejia's body at about 7:00 p.m. off the roadway in the area of Watt Avenue and Dyer Lane in Sacramento, California. ^{[6] [7]}

Preliminary findings revealed that Mejia died from a gunshot wound. ^{[7] [6]}

She was reported missing by her roommate on April 11, 2017.

^{[6] [7]}Mejia was last seen leaving her residence in the 7200 block of Pepperwood Knoll Lane, in the Foothill Farms area north of Elkhorn Boulevard and east of Walerga Road. ^{[7] [6]}

Her vehicle was found the next day in the Arden Arcade area, a 15 minute drive from her home. ^{[7] [6]}

Mejia's death is being investigated as a homicide by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. Detectives do not believe her death was a random murder. ^{[7] [6]}

A person of interest is currently in custody on unrelated criminal charges pending forensic testing.
