Early Life & Education

Jahana Hayes grew up in poverty in the Berkeley Heights housing project in Waterbury, Connecticut. Her family struggled with addiction, relied on public assistance, and at one point lost their apartment. Hayes got pregnant as a teenager, at the time she felt all hopes for any upward mobility seemed beyond her grasp. However, the people in her community and her strong desire for an education propelled her forward. [1]

After graduating from high school, Hayes enrolled in Naugatuck Valley Community College, went on to get her bachelors degree at Southern Connecticut State University and her master's degree and advanced degrees from the University of Saint Joseph and University of Bridgeport, all while working to support her young family. “It is these experiences that compel me to invest so deeply in my community, because I have been the beneficiary of so much undeserved grace. We can do whatever it is we set our minds to, as long as we work hard and work together” says Hayes.

She will be running against Mary Glassman the former First Selectman of Simsbury, Connecticut in the Democratic Party of Connecticut primary on August 14, 2018. The deadline to file was on June 12, 2018. The seat is currently held by Elizabeth Esty who is not seeking re-election.

She said that she had been approached “by folks in my community” to run for other positions in the past, including state senator and various executive offices in the state.

But this time, when Rep. Elizabeth Etsy announced that she wouldn’t be seeking re-election, “it was just different.”

Hayes has also said that she was inspired by seeing many outsiders without political experience running for office.

"My decision to run is inspired by the people in my community,” Hayes said.

“People with real stories, challenges and successes that often never make it into the discussion.

I am running because I see myself in every student, teacher, mom, sister, daughter, friend, neighbor and stranger I meet, and their story is my story.

I want to earn the trust of the people in this district and be the person to carry their concerns to Washington."
