Jake Jakubek was a 22 year old from Newburgh, New York. Jakubek was a star swimmer who served as the two time captain of his high school and SUNY Cortland swim team. He had graduated from SUNY Cortland in mid May, 2016.

Jakubek worked as a lifeguard in Orleans, New York for at least year.

Jakubek's parents are Jill Legg and Mark Jakubek.

He had a brother and a sister, Kramer and Anna Jakubek.

Death

On Saturday May 28, 2016 Jake Jakubek drowned at Pilgrim Lake in Orleans while trying out for a lifeguard position. He slipped beneath the lake's surface during the trials and was later found by an Orleans Fire Department diver in 10 to 15 feet of water. Jake was later pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital.

"He is the best guy I know," former Cortland teammate Luke Strothenke said.

"It's a true tragedy."

"He was the teammate everyone wanted to have as a teammate," the coach told the paper.

"He made others better, not just his teammates but the coaching staff and pretty much everyone around him.

He was an exceptional individual and, in a lot of respects, was very humble about his successes as a swimmer and who he was."

Jack Jakubek's death is being investigated by state and local police.
