Inhaler are an Irish rock band based out of Dublin. The band consists of four members and is fronted by Elijah Hewson, son of Paul Hewson-aka Bono. They are currently signed to Polydor Records.[1][62]
Members and Influences
Inhaler is composed of a group of friends that met at St Andrews school, an academy located in Blackrock, Dublin. In a 2020 interview with BBC News Online, frontman Elijah Hewson discussed the band's origins,[48]
"We started two or three years ago just as kids in a school band doing covers and that sort of thing.
I don't think any of us knew what we wanted to do after school.
The band was something we always enjoyed, so we decided to go for it this year and it's really worked out well."
“For me and for us as a band, we’ve known that there’s going to be doors open.
But those doors will shut just as fast as they open if we’re not good.”
Eli further stated in the interview that being related to Bono motivated him to prove himself as a musician to the world,[70]
“I always say to the lads, if I was another dude, and I heard that Bono’s son was in a band, I would just want them to be crap, I would!
I don’t blame anyone who does think that, either – and it drives us to prove ourselves.
I think it drives us to want to actually perform better, and prove ourselves, playing in the toilets and doing all of these mad tours.
It drives us to be better.
If we were shite, you wouldn’t bother talking to us,”
Inhaler consists of band members:[48]
Josh Jenkinson | Guitar
Robert Keating | Bass Guitar
Ryan McMahon | Drums
As for musical influences, Inhaler has listed popular new wave and alternative bands such as The Stone Roses, Joy Division, The Strokes, Interpol, Kings of Leon, The Cure, and Depeche Mode as some of their personal favorites.[49]
"They're a bit like the Bunnymen and early U2, which is a surprise."
“It’s in the DNA.
He sounds a little bit like his dad.
They’ve been working really hard.
I’ve seen them over the years, practicing in the garden shed and stuff, so it’s really great to see this happening for them.”
Name Origin and Themes
The band decided to call themselves Inhaler after a suggestion from Elijah's sister.
When asked if the band collectively suffered from asthma, Eli stated,[48]
"No, just me.
We were struggling to find a band name that we could all agree on for a long time.
I'm asthmatic so my sister as a joke used to call us The Inhalers and it kind of caught on.
We liked it because it's something you have to rely on and it's a pick-me-up, and it relates to the stuff we're talking about on the new material on the album."
The group is well aware of being entangled with technology and 21st century pleasantries.
Eli commented on the issue, and how the band's name relates to their view of the world,[48]
"As teenagers growing up these days, it's interesting seeing how addictive things are, and that's down to people's phones and social media.
I'm even noticing I just always want to be looking at my phone.
I can't just walk outside and stand there and walk to a place without checking something.
Inhaler is - you take it when you can't breathe and you've got a medical issue, but it relates to self-medication and it's a stimulus.
There's a plethora of stimuli that we have today.
I can see it in my friends.
We'll be sitting there having dinner together and everyone will be zombied out on their phone."
