Controversy over Anal Sex Article
On July 7th, Engle published an article in Teen Vogue titled Anal Sex: What You Need to Know, where she explains how to engage properly in anal sex. [8]When the article was published, it received significant backlash as well as commentators coming to her defense. An earlier article she wrote, A Butthole Manifesto: Why Anal Sex Should Be Reserved For The One, was published in Elite Daily in 2015. [0]
The Activist Mommy uploaded a video of her burning Teen Vogue which has been viewed 8 million times.
[9]The Independent Journalism Review did a follow-up story interviewing parents reactions to the article.
One parent said that “I'm absolutely appalled that the editors approved its inclusion.
Safe sex of all types is a discussion for parents or health class, not what amounts to a fashion and gossip rag"; The IJR concluded that Teen Vogue "would be smart to delete or apologize for the story, not continue defending it."
An article in The Independent criticized Engle's piece from a feminist perspective by defining the participants as "prostate" and "non-prostate" owners. [10]Heidi Stevens of The Chicago Tribune wrote an op-ed defending Engle, saying that her grown up advice is a valuable resource to readers. [9]
