Kotha das [1], the man whose name at one time inspired awe and used to be mentioned only in hush hush tones, died on nov 30.
kotha das, 52, was taken ill and spent the last one week of his life in a private hospital.
his fading away from public memory was such that his death went largely unnoticed in the city in which he was considered a force to reckon with at one time.
kotha das, who was born in bandaraviryal of hayathnagar mandal in ranga reddy district, settled in chanchalguda area 30 years ago.
he had contested from the malakpet assembly constituency as an independent candidate in 1978 and a majlis-e-ittehadul muslimeen (mim) candidate in 1989.
he had also contested the lok sabha elections on a samajwadi party ticket from Nalgonda in 1998.
though he never won an election, das was considered an important person in local politics.
kotha das was allegedly involved in various criminal cases in some police stations limits in the south zone.
but for the last few months of his life, he withdrew from public view and his death went unnoticed in the police circles too.
It all started on April 28 when a gang led by Kotha Das, armed with knives and sticks swooped down on Abids, the city's central shopping and business area, at around 8.30 p.m., broke glass panes in cinema halls, raided hotels and a bar before driving off in three Ambassador cars.
Coincidentally, the 75-minute hit-and-run operation began with the men taking away liquor bottles from a shop in Malakpet, which lies on the fringe of the city and falls within the home minister's constituency.
The manner in which the whole operation was executed not only suggested strongly that the raid was pre-planned, it showed the inability of the city police to intercept a gang of thugs, although a fleet of patrol cars is always supposed to be on the prowl.
Pavithran and the city police stayed up all night to track down the alleged culprits.
But it was only on April 30 that the police managed to lay their hands on them after a tip-off which led them to a hideout.
After the police had given the gang a drubbing, Pavithran gleefully detailed the dramatic swoop to the press.
The joy was short-lived, for within hours Pavithran was summoned by the state's Chief Secretary S.R.
Ramamurthy and asked to go on leave.

He waited for 18 years to take revenge on his father's murderers and finally achieved his target.
But the police managed to arrest him and his gang that carried out the murder of a 40-year-old man at Malakpet last month.
Harinath Goud alias Kattala Raju, 40, of Saroornagar was brutally stabbed to death at Saleem Nagar in Malakpet on June 18 while he was on his way from Saroornagar to Malakpet on a two-wheeler.
According to the police, Harinath Goud was an accused in the 1991 murder case of Ganesh Goud, younger brother of gangster Kotha Das.
Harinath [2]was however acquitted of the murder charge in 1995 and was leading a normal life after that.
After a detailed probe, the East Zone team of the Task Force apprehended, Ganesh Goud's son, K Mahender Goud, of Chanchalguda, Y Satish Reddy, of Dabeerpura, G Ashok, 24, from Dilsukhanagar and Attama Ram Rathord of Chanchalguda.
According to Task Force Inspector T S Ravi Kumar, Mahender was just a seven- year-old boy when his father was murdered and had always wanted to take revenge for his father's murder.
After the murder of Ganesh Goud, his family suffered severe financial crisis.
Mahender was the second amongst four children in the family.
His elder brother is a mentally retarded person.
