Early Life & Education
VanEck's Gabor Gurbacs on Bringing a Bitcoin ETF to Market
Gabord Gurbacs was born in Hungary in 1990, a year after the end of communism in Hungary. He and attended the Gandhi School in Pécs, Hungary. He also participated in a Leadership Program at Harvard University. Gurbacs briefly lived in Italy and Germany before moving to the United States and finishing up high school at Deerfield Academy. Gurbacs later attended Williams College where he made Dean's list and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Arts in German andSociology in 2014. He also studied Mathematical Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2013. Gurbacs became interested in Bitcoin in 2012, while working on distributed systems, discrete mathematics, and graph theory at Williams College. Gurbacs first heard of Bitcoin while visiting Budapest Technical University. One of his friends bought Bitcoin by sending $80 through Western Union to someone they had never met in Romania who in return emailed him the public key for a Bitcoin wallet address containing $80 before sending him the private key to the wallet in the mail. Gurbacs is fluent in both written and verbal German, Hungarian, English and Romanian. He is also conversant in Italian and French.
Career
Gabord Gurbacs has been the Director of Digital Asset Strategy at VanEck, a leading investment management firm, since 2017. Gurbacs has led several projects for the firm including the launch of their upcoming Bitcoin ETF. He was previously a Product Management/ETF Analyst at VanEck from 2014-2017. In this role, he worked on building traditional ETF products.
Gurbacs is a Soros and Bronfman Scholar, as well as a Wilmers and Bostert Fellow at Williams College.
He worked on the adaptation of a Nobel Prize winning project in microfinance. From 2009-2015, Gurbacs was the Founder and CEO of Archeo World Hungary. Gurbacs previously worked as a Research Associate at Williams College from 2012-2014 and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2013. In the summer of 2013, Gurbacs worked as Mergers Intern at MountainOne. From 2010-2013, Gurbacs served as the Founder and CEO of Pannon Regiofejlesztesi Kft.
