Smith graduated from the University of Virginia with degrees in economics and architecture in 1959. He worked with Sarasota School of Architecture pioneers Victor Lundy, Ralph Zimmerman, and William Zimmerman, before opening his own firm in 1961. [2]
Smith redesigned the Plymouth Harbor retirement center on St. Armands Key in 1966.
I n 1970, tackled the 12 acre, 113 home Sandy Cove development on Siesta Key.
He also helped restorey buildings in what became the Burns Court Historic District.
In 2001 he created Conrad Beach, a 27-home infill neighborhood of Key West-style homes on Longboat Key.
smith os a charter member of New Urbanism.
He helped develop the Florida Endangered Lands Act.
His awards include AIA Honor Award recognition for Plymouth Harbor in 1966 and a Test of Time Award in 1991 l. He also received.an Honor Award for Sandy Cove in 1970.
Coastal Living Magazine listed Conrad Village as its Community Development of the Year in 2001.
"My passion today involves urban design and community development with its focus on the public realm,” he says.
