History
Drew Scanlon was working as a video producer for a website that covers the video game industry called Giant Bomb. His duties at the company included editing and shooting videos, but also to appear in some of the videos.
Giant Bomb hosted a weekly show called "Unprofessional Fridays" for their premium subscribers, where some of the content creators recorded themselves playing video games.
In 2014, Scanlon recorded a video of his friend Jeff playing an action-adventure game called Starbound, which involves farming. In the video, Scanlon reacted to Jeff saying that he was "doing some farming with my hoe here." Jeff was referring to the gardening tool, which Scanlon interpreted it another way.
In 2017, the "Blinking White Guy" meme went viral and became a larger phenomenon outside the gaming industry.
Scanlon started getting messages from people about the GIF being used in different contexts.
