Colemon is listed on the website BoxRec mistakenly as Derrick Coleman Jr. As of May 2021, he has a record of thirteen wins and one loss. He has scored nine knockouts. He fights in the super welterweight division. Colemon had 135 amateur boxing matches and was a four time national champion. He was trained in the early part of his career by Emanuel Steward of Kronk Gym. He is managed by Sheer Sports Management and advised by Dave Dogan. Rachel Charles of Sheer Sports Management stated she was working on correcting the issue of Colemon's name being misspelt on the Internet.[2]
He competed on November 2, 2019 and scored a unanimous decision against Jarvis Frazier at the Bourbon Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. He began his career on November 3,2017. He fought three times in 2020, losing to Joseph Jackson by decision and defeating Lisandro de los Santos and Cristian Vallejo Hermosillo. Derrick was quoted about his progress as a fighter:
