David Cancel

David is CEO at Drift, Ex-Chief Product Officer at HubSpot following HubSpot's acquisition of Performable, where he was previously former CEO and Founder. Until recently David was the CTO and Co-founder of Lookery. Before starting Lookery David started Compete where he was the CTO, acquired by Taylor Nelson Sofres. Prior to Compete David was the CTO of BuyerZone, acquired by Reed Elsevier. In the late 90's he was a part of the founding team of Bolt.com and part of Lycos.

In addition to HubSpot, David is on the advisory boards of Spark Capital, Visible Measures, Sonian Networks, Yotta, and Shareaholic. [0]

Early life

David Cancel was born in the Bronx and grew up in Queens. His dad was from Puerto Rico, and mom was from Ecuador. They only spoke Spanish in their house. David learned how to speak English watching “Gilligan’s Island” and “The Brady Bunch.”

Both his parents worked for themselves: his dad was a contractor, and mom was a seamstress. She did mostly wedding gowns. According to one of the interviews taken from David by The New York Times, his parents wanted him to be an accountant. [2]

In my mom’s mind, being an accountant meant I would wear a suit and ride the train to work and have a briefcase.

I had a million jobs growing up — everything from paperboy to working in warehouses.

In a lot of those jobs, they asked me to be the manager or the group leader.

I think most of it was because of my parents.

I like having autonomy, and the flip side of autonomy is accountability.

Education

David has a Bachelor's degree that he received from Queens College. [3]He attributes much of his entrepreneurial spirit from his parents who both immigrated from their respective countries of origin and were thrust into entrepreneurship out of necessity.

Growing up around that mentality influenced David later in his life. While attending college David held many full-time positions as well. This had a negative impact on his college life, but it led him to realize that this was not the life he wanted. He didn't like working for someone else. [4]

Career

David started his career path at Bolt.com, as a Founding Member and Chief Software Architect in 1996 and worked there until 1999. Since January 1999 he's worked for Lycos and also was the Founding Member there. [5]Moreover, David was the co-founder and CTO of Lookery, the Founder and CTO of Compete, which was acquired by WPP(LON: WPP), and the CTO of BuyerZone, which was acquired by Reed Elsevier (NYSE: RUK). Before joining HubSpot, David was the CEO of Performable, a next-generation marketing automation software platform. [1]In June 2011, David joined HubSpot and left in three years later in September 2014. While working there, he managed the Product, Engineering, and User Experience organizations. Since January 2010, David has been an advisor, investor, and director of various startups such as Charles River Ventures, Spark Capital, NextView Ventures, RoughDraft.vc, EverTrue, Bigcommerce, Yotta, Help Scout, Disconnect.me, etc. Since October 2014, David has been the CEO of Drift. Drift is a conversation-driven marketing and sales platform. They're helping over 50,000 businesses better match the way customers want to buy today. [5]

Personal life

David is originally from New York City and now lives in the Boston area with his superstar wife and daughter. He loves making something from nothing. [0]
