Dave (TV Series), starring rapper Dave Burd (aka Lil Dicky) as himself, is a comedy television series on the FXX network. The first two episodes aired on March 4th, 2020. The show is currently streaming on Hulu, Amazon Video, and Vudu.
Dave is executively produced by Kevin Hart, Greg Mottola, Saladin Patterson, Scooter Braun, Marty Bowen, Mike Hertz, James Shin and Scott Manson.
The show is aimed in part to challenge toxic masculinity, even Dave's rapper name "Lil Dicky" is a nod to that. Many of his songs, though raunchy and explicit, convey messages tackling issues like hypermasculinity ("Classic Male Pregame") and white privilege ("White Dude").[8]
"It's hard for people to take being funny seriously, even though I don't think it's mutually exclusive," Dave Burd tells the Recording Academy. "I think I can be funny and still very musically credible." [7]
GaTa, who is Lil Dicky's hype man both on the show and in real life, is diagnosed bipolar disorder (something he has also struggled with in real life) and hospitalized, shown in a flashback.
Societal standards dictate that men are not supposed to be emotional.
Many people don't believe in mental illness to begin with as well, and this sentiment is notably enforced in/on black, hispanic, and asian communities.
GaTa's character tackles both of those subjects
“I’m glad you told us — and I think it’s pretty cool that we’ve got the first hype man that’s clinically depressed.”
-Andrew Santino in "Hype Man" S1Ep05
