Danya Bacchus is an American journalist based in Los Angeles, California. She is a correspondent at CBS Newspath. [1]
Early Life
In an interview with Nabjmemphis.wordpress.com, Bacchus told about her childhood dreams:
"Growing up I wanted to be a doctor.
I said I was going to be a pediatrician."[15]
The idea of working in the medical field did not hold long, she said.[15]
"The dean of the biology department was breaking down all the classes I would have to take, and I was sitting there bored."[15]
Education
Bacchus graduated from North Carolina Agriculture and Technology University with a Bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication. [1] During Bacchus' senior year she interned at a local station in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.[15]
Career
She began her career working behind the scenes as an assignment editor and producer at WXLV. Bacchus also worked as a production assistant for BET and writer for TV One.
Prior to joining ABC News in August 2016, she was a reporter and anchor at NBC in San Diego, California. [1]
Before arriving in San Diego, Bacchus was a general assignment reporter at WREG in Memphis, Tennessee. Before going to Memphis, she was a reporter and anchor at WMDT, a local ABC affiliate in Salisbury, Maryland. [1]
In 2019, Bacchus became a correspondent at CBS Newspath.
She joined CBS News after spending the past three years as a freelance correspondent for ABC News in West Los Angeles, where she reported on a wide range of national stories, including the college admissions scandal, a hostage standoff at a Los Angeles Trader Joe's supermarket, and the case of a California couple who kept their 13 children shackled in their home.[4]
In 2016, Bacchus completed a prestigious eight-month Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan. The program is named after the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the late, legendary 60 Minutes correspondent Mike Wallace. Each of the 18 to 20 participants each year are required to complete a research project. Bacchus' research was titled "Leaderless Movements: The Rise of Digital Activism."[4]
She is a former President of the San Diego Association of Black Journalists and a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
