Danielle "Danni" Kemp was a student at Stony Brook University and a graduate of Joseph A. Foran High School in Milford, Connecticut. She graduated in 2015. At Foran High School, Kemp was the star of the softball team, where she played catcher.

In her junior year at Foran High, Kemp hit.446 and she made the All-State team.

Kemp also played on the basketball and volleyball teams while in high school.

Kemp was a three-sport athlete at Foran and an All-State softball player in 2015.

She also played softball her freshman year at Stony Brook in 2016.

Kemp was a recipient of the Fairfield County Sports Commission's Chelsea Cohen Award for her inspirational battle and strength in overcoming a life-altering obstacle.

She also received a Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance Bob Casey Courage Award.

When Kamp was a sophomore in high school, she was treated for renal cell cancer, a rare kidney disease. She surprised everyone on her softball team by playing her sophomore year with cancer.

In August 2016, while playing for the Stratford Brakettes at a softball game, Danielle got hit in the head with a pitch. She thought she had a concussion, but an MRI revealed she had an inoperable brain tumor.

Her coach Jeff Bevino has said of Kemp: “Her smile was contagious and she was the most talented athlete that I’ve ever coached. Just a beautiful, beautiful young woman, and we’ll miss her so much. I’ve watched her grow up since she was six years old.”

Kemp missed her fall semester at Stony Brook to undergo radiation treatment.

She started treatments for the tumor in August at Yale-New Haven Hospital. In December, Kemp traveled to Germany for a series of treatments. Her teammates at Stony Brook dedicated the spring season to Kemp.

On Twitter, the hashtags #DanniStrong and #DK23 have been used by teammates at Stony Brook and other America East Conference softball programs.

Kemp's parents are Clifford George Kemp Jr. and Melinda Kemp.

She has a sister, Alyssa.

Her best friend is Fallon Bevino, daughter of Danielle's softball coach Jeff Bevino.

Fallon and Danielle have been friends for as long as they can remember.
