Animal Cruelty
On June 22, 2016 Dan Peabody was arrested and charged with felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and making false statements to the police.
Peabody resigned from the Cherokee School Police Department on June 16, 2016, eight days before he was arrested. The investigation of Dan Peabody as after his arrest, police found dog remains in his previous home. It is unknown how and when the dog died. One of the causes that Peabody said he cared about on LinkedIn was animal welfare. [undefined]
On June 10, Dan Peabody, left a police dog in his care, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois named Inca, in a hot patrol car for hours on June 10, causing the dog to die from heatstroke.
He said that he left the dog in the car for three hours when the temperature was over 90 Fahrenheit since he went to check on another dog and forgot about Inca.
The car that the dog died in was a regular police car that was not equipped as a K9 car with the alarms and other features needed to safely hold a dog.
In 2012, an ex-police Golden Labrador dog, Dale died while in Dan Peabody's care.
Dan Peabody claimed that Dale died from choking.
However it was later found that Peabody shot Dale to death.
Dan Peabody is being held in jail on bond of $24,000 which has not made.
His first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday June 23, 2016.
On June 15, 2016 it was found that Peabody's wife Tyler Verlander-Peabody ran an illegal kennel from their home. According to police she did not have a business license and the house was not licensed for business. However police do not believe that any animals were harmed or abused at her business.
