On January 23, 2018, Mendez is accused of walking into The Peach Stand in Fort Mill, South Carolina and gunning down a 19-year-old cashier, Karson Whitesell. ^{[0] [1]}

Whitesell was working at the landmark Peach Stand on Highway 160 in Fort Mill when Mendez walked into the business and shot her. Whitesell died at the scene. ^{[1] [0]}

Mendez was taken into custody minutes after the shooting around at 4:40 p.m. local time.

He was apprehended without incident.
