Personal Life
Kolfage was born in Detroit and grew up in Waikiki, Hawaii. He married Ashley Goetz on Ma y 28, 2011. [1]
Education
Brian receives the Purple Heart award
He graduated from the University of Arizona in 2014 with a degree in Architecture. [1]
Service
Airman Kolfage enlisted in the United States Air Force in 2001. He was stationed at the Goodfellow Air Force Base with the 17th Security Forces Squadron. [5]
His second deployment for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. On September 11, 2004, after working a night shift at Balad Air Base, he awoke in the afternoon, left his tent to get some water and walked no more than 25 feet when the airbase came under a rocket attack. It would be the last time he would walk on the legs he was born with. A 107mm rocket shell exploded about three feet from Airman Kolfage. He was thrown several feet in the air and landed against a wall of sandbags, still conscious, and began calling for help. [1]
Despite suffering multiple amputations and the looming possibility of death, Airman Kolfage still maintained incredible strength and courage throughout his recovery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. [1] He received a Purple Heart for his service. [1]
