Career

Bob served with three other University Park firefighters on a task force sent to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. [1]
They were supposed to cross-train officers and help register victims for federal aid but ended up wading through toxic waste in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, one of the hardest-hit areas. They served on a team of 20 firefighters from across the U.S. who searched for survivors trapped in houses and cataloged the dead. [1]
"They called it search and rescue, but it was really more search and recovery," Bob said in October 2005.

"But we didn't want to leave."
They faced intense heat, snakes and the overwhelming stench of death.
