Mike Castillo, better known as Big Island Mike, is a Tattoo artist and owner of Hale Nui Tattoos. He is based out of the Honolulu area but travels often to Los Angeles, California. [1]
Biography
Early Life
Mike was born and raised in Hawaii and started riding bikes when he was 13-years-old.
He would ride everywhere with his friends, from basketball courts to a makeshift park he made in his parents' backyard.
While in high school, Mike picked up photography and took a semester of it in college.
He credits Mark Losey and Adam Booth for teaching him how to shoot properly and get his photos into BMX magazines.
In addition, Mike did BMX graphics for several companies including Interbike S&M Bikes, Hoffman Bikes, and Rick Thorne’s Free Agent line.
Involvement in BMX
Mike has been part of the fabric of the BMX scene for over three decades.
He has been judging BMX contests since 1992, rode for a time for S&M, and worked at Hoffman Bikes in Oklahoma for 9 years. and owned a bike/skate/coffee establishment called the Big House with his friend Kala in Hawaii where many prominent people in the scene would frequent
Tattoo Artistry
Mike started tattooing in 2001 under the apprenticeship of Mark Mahoney at he the Shamrock Social Club in Hollywood, California and later South Pacific Tattoo Co. in Waikiki with Wondo. He would later end up buying the tattoo shop from him and renamed it Hale Nui Tattoos which means "Big House" in Hawaiian.
