Dewan graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor's degree in music and Spanish. She received a post graduate diploma from University of Technology in 2008. ^[undefined]

She has in recent years focused her work on Russia, the Syrian War, Brexit and developments in Turkey after the failed 2016 coup. ^[1]

Before joining CNN, Dewan spent seven years as a correspondent and news editor in Southeast Asia. Based in Jakarta, she covered two elections that shaped Indonesia's democracy after more than three decades of dictatorship, and reported on the geopolitics and security issues around the South China Sea. ^[1]
