Shafiqul Islam Masud

Shafiqul Islam Masud (Bengali: শফিকুল ইসলাম মাসুদ) is secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka City South and a member of the party's central working committee. [1] He is a prominent leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led 20-party Alliance [2] and was the central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir during the session of 2006 and 2007. [4]

Early life and education

He was born on 1 March 1978, in Patuakhali District. His father's name is Sirajuddin Khan and mother's name is Kanis Fatema. He has completed his honors, master's degree and achieved his doctorate degree on Bangla language and literature from Rajshahi University. [6]

Political life

He joined at Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir (BICS) in 1987.

In 1996 he took oath as a member of BICS.

Shortly after, he assumed the role of the president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Rajshahi University Branch.

Later he appointed as a Central Cultural Secretary of BICS.

He sreved the organization as a secretary general for two subsequent years (2004 and 2005).

Finally, he was elected as central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir for two sessions in 2006 and 2007.

He joined at Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami after completion his studies and presently, he is one of assistant secretaries of Dhaka City Jamaat-e-Islami Unit.

Arrest

Masud was arrested on 9 August 2014 along with nine other Jamaat activists from Mohammadpur in Dhaka.

[8] After the arrests, he along with others was sent for four days remand, where allegations of severe torture on Masud have arisen against the police in lieu of his political identity.

He was later again granted two days remand on August 14, which was later extended to 5 days.

After a 5-day remand, Mohammadpur police took Masud along with 9 accused to court on Wednesday 20 August 2014, where the remand was extended by additional chief metropolitan magistrate Ali Masud Sheikh following the police's appeal for 7 days custody [10] amid strong allegations of torture in custody.

On 25 August, Masud was granted 14 more days remand against a prayer of 54 days by Detective Branch of police in six cases against him, 4 cases at Motijheel police station and 2 cases at Ramna police station.

Lawyers and police were seen carrying him to court.

On 3 September, the court granted 7 more days remand against Masud, who attended in a wheelchair, in three more cases at Paltan police station against an appeal for 30 days remand.

According to the U.S. State Department's 2016 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, police twice rearrested Masud at the gate of Dhaka Central Jail, on 25 December 2015 and 24 April 2016, as soon as he was released on bail. [3] In October 2016, while in jail, he was elected secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka Metropolitan South. He was released on bail on 24 June 2017. [5]

Personal life

Masud married Dr Zakia Farhana, daughter of freedom fighter and Jamaat leader Ataur Rahman, president of Jamaat Rajshahi City.
