Hinrich Foundation

The Hinrich Foundation is an independent charitable foundation headquartered in Hong Kong. [1] [2] It was established in 2012 by Merle A. Hinrich, [3] the founder and executive chairman of Global Sources [4] to encourage sustainable global trade out of a belief that it promotes economic prosperity and peace. [5] It aims to encourage the private sector and governments to drive innovation and competitiveness in trade-related activities undertaken by individuals, companies, industries and countries by focusing on three program areas such as trade scholarships & careers, [6] export trade assistance [7] [8] and international trade research. [9]

Milestones of Hinrich Foundation
2012Merle A. Hinrich starts the Hinrich Foundation.
2013Export Assistance Program support surpasses 1,000 company beneficiaries.
2013Established Global Sources-Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Scholarship partnership: Greater China.
2013Established VH-Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Development partnership formed: Bangladesh.
2014Co-sponsored Myanmar Rule of Law workshop with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation and Hong Kong University’s School of Law.
2014Launched Online Developing Country Sourcing sites: India, Nepal, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines & Indonesia.
2014Organized and hosted the The Role of Business in Shaping the Future of Education at Asia Society Hong Kong.
2015Established Dehres-Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Scholarships partnership: Mainland China.
2015Established adidas suppliers-Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Scholarships partnership: Myanmar & Cambodia.
2015Hong Kong Baptist University bestows Honorary University Fellowship upon Merle A. Hinrich.

History

The Hinrich Foundation was established in 2012.

The foundation merged with Kearny Alliance Asia, assuming control of activities and management previously performed by Kearny Alliance Asia.

The foundation assumed financial support of scholars and fellows of the Kearny Alliance Asia, with the scholars becoming Hinrich Global Trade Scholars.

The foundation currently has 105 total scholars and alumni [1] and fellows.

Principles

The Hinrich Foundation has stated its objectives [11] are to:

  • Encourage equality in trade development by influencing policymakers to take a balanced approach and support open, free, transparent and fair global trade.

  • Encourage both the private sector and governments to drive innovation and competitiveness.

  • Sponsor the education and skill development of individuals who wish to participate in international trade.

  • Provide practical trade services which in turn create jobs.

Programs

Trade scholarships & careers

The Hinrich Foundation sponsor educational opportunities for individuals who show a commitment to participating in or promoting innovative and competitive global trade.

They offer Hinrich Global Trade Leaders Scholarships [1] to students from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the US to study in China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Vietnam and the US.

They ensure their scholars experience extended internships [1] and career development opportunities with export related partner organizations in ten countries.

Export trade assistance

They offer practical trade services to promote and coach producers on how to participate in global trade.

Through Export trade assistance program, [1] the Hinrich Foundation connects exporters across developing Asia with buyers worldwide.

International trade research

The Hinrich Foundation believes that the health of the global economy and peace between nations depend on countries having productive trade relationships, which require open, fact-based dialogues.

They initiate thought leadership research, [1] elicit opinions and disseminate information about global trade to encourage objective debate and balanced policy making.

Corporate social responsibility

The Hinrich Foundation has contributed to Room to Read by donating funds to construct the Shree Navajyoti Primary School in Bhumisthan, Dhading Bagmati, Nepal and offering Room to Read senior students internships in Cambodia.

The organization also gave financial support to Child’s Dream to complete the building of the in Xaingabouli, Laos.
