Caleb Maupin is a journalist and political analyst who appears frequently on RT and PressTV. [9] Tasnim News Agency described him as "a native of Ohio who has campaigned against war and the U.S. financial system". [10] He was a member of Workers World Party, [11] and Fight Imperialism – Stand Together (FIST) (WWP's youth wing) though he has recently distanced himself from that organization. He also worked as a youth organizer for the International Action Center and was involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement from its planning stages. [12]
Maupin's political activism began while attending Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio. [13] In 2010, he video recorded a confrontation between Collinwood High School students who walked out to protest teacher layoffs and the police. [14] His video footage resulted in one of the students being acquitted in juvenile court. [15] He was a figure within the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City. [16] [18] [9] Maupin writes on American foreign policy and other social issues. [9]
He was a featured guest at the 2014 New Horizon Conference in Iran. [9] [9] On September 6, 2013, he appeared on CNN as a representative of those protesting US intervention in Syria. [9] In May 2015, he accompanied a mission of the Red Crescent Society of the Iran to Yemen, on the Iran Shahed Rescue Ship. [9] The ship did not reach Yemen, but was diverted to the port of Djibouti [9]
He has drawn criticism for describing the war in Yemen by saying "What’s more American than trying to fight off the influence of a foreign king and have control of your country? I mean, this sounds like 1776 to me but the US government seems to be on the opposite side.” [9]
On July 8, 2017, he debated Augustus Sol Invictus, an alt-right activist who participated in the infamous Unite The Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. [9] The debate, entitled "The Revolutionary Left vs. The Revolutionary Right" was promoted on social media by Julian Assange. [9] At the debate, Maupin's rhetoric shifted from his earlier political style, saying: "The kind of socialism that works in China is called Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and the only type of socialism that is ever going to work in this country will be a socialism with American characteristics. Some kind of Russian, Chinese, or Korean system is never going to be imposed on this country. I strongly believe that someday we will have a socialism in this country, but it will be a socialism rooted in progressive and democratic struggles here, on this soil. People ask me, 'Caleb, are you still a Marxist-Leninist ?' Well, I study Marx and Lenin, there's plenty to learn by reading their work, but as much as I'm a Marxist-Leninist, I'm also Lincoln-ist and a Roosevelt-ist. I'm a Frederick Douglas-ist and a Harriet Tubman-ite. I'm a student of William Z. Foster, Eugene Debs and Huey Newton..."
