Luke Penella (sax), Dmitry Ishenko (bass, loops) and Rob Mitzner (drums) unite to form NYC-based trio “The Smoke People”, combining mind-bending loops and grooves with elements of jazz, drum ‘n bass, and instrumental indie rock in their eponymous debut album on the label Free Lunch (ABB Records). Bassist Ishenko uses a variety of loops and effects to create a wide sonic tapestry on which the group's original tunes are woven, evoking the group’s diverse influences, including The Bad Plus, Radiohead, Bill Frisell, Ornette Coleman, Power Tools, The Fringe, Alas No Axis, and Tony Williams' Lifetime.. Drummer Mitzner locks in the groove with boundless energy and creativity, while Penella's saxophone soars high above, evoking such masters as George Garzone and Kenny Garrett. The Smoke People released their debut album to a packed house at New York’s legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in November 2014, with acclaimed saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo as their special guest.

Luke Penella is a Massachusetts native and graduate of The Berklee College of Music. He has shared the stage with such artists as rapper Slick Rick, Big Danny Kane, Westbound Train and the Lifted Crew and has his own line of Penella saxophones, a division of Weissman Flutes (http://www.penellasaxophone.com). Dmitry Ishenko hails from San Francisco and holds a masters degree from New England Conservatory. He has performed and recorded with sax legends Steve Lacy and John Tchicai, along with Paul Banks of Interpol. Drummer Rob Mitzner is a DC-area native and a graduate of Brown University. His performing credits include Sam Kininger (Soulive), Andrew D’Angelo, and singer-songwriter Jann Klose. He recorded the soundtrack for the Broadway show “Outside Mullingar” and was featured in “Modern Drummer Magazine”. (http://www.robmitzner.com)
