The Cosmic King & His Interstellar Time Dinosaur is an American alternative rock band originating from Flowery Branch, GA. The band currently exists as a trio consisting of drummer (Tyler) Yox, guitarist/vocalist/lyricist/cover artist Gavin Gaines, and bassist/ back-up vocalist Scott Gilliam.
The trio met through high school band, easily forming friendships through their shared interest in making and appreciating music. All were individually involved in music in some way, usually practicing at home to make themselves better or living vicariously through other bands’ music by playing covers. Mutual interest in the music scene evolved into occasional jams in Yox’s basement, which further progressed into the formation of The Cosmic King & His Interstellar Time Dinosaur in the summer of 2013.
The band channels many influences that are broadly described as “psychedelic, alternative, blues,” and generally “juicy” in nature, with thick bass groove, raunchy riffs, and solid percussion. Each member brings their own inspirations to the table, all melting together to become the unique blend of style that is The Cosmic King & His Interstellar Time Dinosaur.
~ Individual Biographies
Yox (b. Tyler Yox on July 14th, 1997 in Tampa, FL) is the current drummer of TCK&HITD; having played drums for five years. His instrumental range includes drumset, keyboard, mallet instruments, etc. Yox tends to write the majority of the rhythms played, which is fitting since he is the primary source of rhythm. He is heavily involved with the school’s music program, participating in several of the extracurricular activities offered, which assists in keeping his skills sharp. Yox’s musical influences include Led Zeppelin, Rush,
Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, and Muse (pre-2006). His role model is Dennis Chambers, an American drummer well-known for his proficient technique while maintaining a jazz/funk-oriented style.
Gavin Gaines (b. August 29th, 1997 in Flowery Branch, GA) is the current guitarist and vocalist of TCK&HITD; a key founding member of the group. A tenor saxophone player and keyboardist, Gaines supplies a lot of the blues influence within the band. He also writes the majority of the band’s lyrics.
He attends Flowery Branch High School with drummer Tyler Yox, and will spend his junior year involved with his school’s several music groups. Some of Gaines’ favorite bands include The Black Keys, Rush, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Deep Purple, The White Stripes, and The Raconteurs. His role model is Jimi Hendrix, a world-famous singer/guitarist/songwriter that completely changed the hard rock music scene of the 1960’s.
Scott Gilliam (b. October 25, 1994 in Santa Cruz, CA) is the current bassist of TCK&HITD; and provides a bulk of the groove found in the band’s music. Along with bass, Gilliam plays tuba and upright bass.
Gilliam, studies at Georgia State University. His inspiration for music comes from bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Rush, The Black Keys, The Raconteurs, The White Stripes, The Dead Weather, The Rolling Stones, Pond, and Tame Impala. His role models include John Paul Jones, bassist of Led Zeppelin, and Paul McCartney, bassist and singer of The Beatles.
The Cosmic King & His Interstellar Time Dinosaur plan to continue writing original material and covering favorite songs, and all-in-all just continue making music with good friends, trying to innovate the art of rock and roll and inspire others to do the same. [+]
