Stephen Craig Paddock (April 9, 1953 - October 1, 2017) was an American mass murderer who committed a mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 1, 2017, that left over 58 people dead and over 515 others injured. [8][7][5][4] He resided in Mesquite, Nevada and was the partner of Marilou Danley. [8] [7] [5] [4] [9]

Las Vegas Mass Shooting

Stephen Paddock was identified as the shooter in the Mandalay Bay Resort Shooting where at least 58 people were killed and over 500 others were wounded. [4] [5] [4] Just after 10:00 p.m. local time, Paddock firing from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel down at the Route 91 Harvest Music festival, which was located in a fairgrounds area on Las Vegas Boulevard, hitting several concertgoers. Paddock committed suicide by shooting himself in his mouth as a SWAT team closed in on him. [19] [86] [84]

Photos and videos from the concert festival also showed multiple victims, including people on the ground, bleeding. The worst mass shooting in U.S. history was first reported at about 10:05 p.m. local time, with Paddock firing for at least 10 minutes. The scene remained active at 3:30 a.m. and people were being told to stay away. [7] [5] [4] [13]

Authorities had located 23 firearms inside the hotel room, which he checked into on Thursday September 28, 2017, along with two platforms set up to shoot from. Paddock also had cameras to see police arriving. He had swung a heavy hammer to smash out two windows to shoot at the unsuspecting crowd of festival attendees. [84] [83] [82]

Paddock had a “do not disturb” sign on the door for three days, so no housekeepers entered the room. [86]

He is believed to have used long range rifles. 12 of the rifles found in his hotel room were outfitted with a bump stock, which allows a semiautomatic rifle to fire rounds faster, mimicking an automatic weapon. [86] [84]

The guns included a handgun, along with a .223 caliber and a .308 caliber rifle. All of the weapons were purchased at gun shops in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Texas, all legally. [86] [42] [40]

Another 19 firearms were found in Paddock’s Mesquite, Nevada home on October 2, 2017, along with explosives and several rounds of ammunition. [45] [44]

Several pounds of ammonium nitrate, which is used to make explosives, were also found in Paddock’s car. [45] [44] On June 21, 2017, Paddok was prescribed 50 10-milligram diazepam tablets by physician Dr. Steven Winkler. [75] Paddock purchased the drug under the brand name valium, without insurance at a Walgreens store in Reno on the same day it was prescribed. [75]

The class of drugs can trigger aggressive behavior and psychotic experiences. [75]

Stephen Paddock's grew up in Tucson, Arizona and Sun Valley, California.[8] He had three brothers, Eric Paddock and Bruce Paddock, and one who has yet to be identified.

He was raised by a single mother. His father, Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, is notorious for being on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list for robbing three banks and escaping from prison.[63] Benjamin was diagnosed as psychopathic after his arrest in the late 1960s. [8]

Education & Career

Stephen Paddock held various federal jobs in the 1970's and 80's. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, he was a mailman for the U.S. Postal Service in the mid-to-late 70's; an agent with the Internal Revenue Service from 1978 to 1984; and worked for the Defense Contract Audit Agency in 1984 and 1985.[42]

Stephen and his brother Eric Paddock shared a real-estate business for decades, and when they sold it Stephen made about $2 million. [86] [84]

Throughout his time in real investing, he purchased at least nine houses, condos, and apartment buildings, allowing him to live a comfortable life in semi-retirement. [86] [84]

In 2014 he paid $369,022 in cash for the home he shared with his girlfriend Marilou Danley in Mesquite, Nevada. He erected a mesh privacy screen around the property, and was forced to take it down after his neighbors signed a petition. [86] [84]

He was much less private at a home he owned in Melbourne, Florida, giving a neighbor a key and telling him he could borrow tools if he kept an eye on the house during the time when he was out of town. [86] [84]

He attended California State University, Northridge graduating in 1977 with a degree in business administration. [86]

Personal Life

Stephen Craig Paddock was born on April 9, 1953 in the state of Iowa. For a part of his life, Stephen grew up on the side of the freeway in San Fernando Valley, California.[62]

Paddock was not known to Las Vegas before his death. [8] [7] [5] [4] Paddock lived in a three-year-old, $396,000 two-bedroom home in the small retirement and golf community of Mesquite, Nevada, 80 miles north east of Las Vegas near the Arizona state border. [14] [45] [44]

Stephen Paddock was an accountant for many years.[33] At one point, he was employed by a company that later became Lockheed Martin (1985 to 1988).[4]

Paddock was a licensed hunter and private pilot, and owned an aircraft  at Mesquite Metro Airport from 2007 to 2009. [4]

Stephen's brother Eric Paddock stated that he was a normal Las Vegas resident, eating burritos and gambling, and that he showed no political or religious affiliations. [16] [44] [45]

Gambling

Paddock was an avid gambler. According to his brother, Eric Paddock, he gambled successfully for 20+ years and was has been quoted saying, "It's like a job to him."[62] An acquaintance recalls that he won a lot of money applying algorithms to gambling.[82]

On multiple occasions, Stephen Paddock gambled more than $10,000 per day and, in some cases, amounts more than $20,000 and $30,000 at Las Vegas casinos, according to an NBC News source who read the suspect's Multiple Currency Transaction Report (CTR) and a casino gaming executive. [8]

According to a U.S. statute, a CTR is a Treasury- and IRS-mandated report that casinos have to file when "each transaction in currency involving cash-in and cash-out of more than $10,000 in a gaming day. [8]

Relationship with Marilou Danley

Paddock lived with his significant other Marilou Danley before the shooting.[6] From 2013 to 2015, they lived together in a retirement home in Melbourne, Florida.[42]

According to neighbors, he couple also lived in a retirement community in Reno, Nevada for several years.[83]

It has been reported that he frequently berated Danley. The supervisor of a Starbucks inside the Virgin River Casino in Mesquite, Esperanza Mendoza, says that he would verbally abuse her there when she asked to use his casino card to make a purchase.[61]

Before the mass shooting, he wired $100,000 to Marilou's bank account in the Philippines.[53][60] His brother Eric noted, however, that this was not abnormal for him to send, as he was incredibly wealthy.[62]

Personality

An Australian acquaintance of Paddock's, who chose to remain anonymous, described Paddock as "extremely intelligent, methodical, conservative – guarded – and strategic. A planning, thinking type of guy." He particularly recalls him studying gun laws to know his rights to own weapons.[82]

Both he and his brother Eric called Stephen a "generous" man.[33][82]

His neighbors from Reno described him as "extremely standoffish."[83]

Motive

Image
FBI claming there is no motive

Sources indicate that he left a note on a side table of his hotel room.[56][58] Despite this, the police have repeatedly stated that they do not know the motive and have yet to make public any details.[33] [56]

Paddock was prescribed Valium on June 21, 2017, which can lead to aggressive behavior as a side effect. [77] Antidepressants have been present in other shootings such as the Columbine High School massacre, Virginia Tech massacre, and the Thurston High School shooting. [78]

Paddock had no criminal record aside from a minor infraction. [45] [44]

Aftermath

Authorities stated that a motive for the shooting had not yet been determined. They also stated that Paddock acted alone and was not connected to terrorism. [13] [9] [8] [5]

Marilou Danley who was named a person of interest was also located by authorities, she is believed to be his roommate. [13] [8] [7] [8] She was contacted overseas and was later dismissed as a person of interest in the shooting. [45] [44]

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted, "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!" [12]

Hours after the shooting, the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility, though this was later refuted by an FBI spokesperson as the claim lacked any credible evidence. [39] [45] [44]

Many paid tribute to the Victims of the Mandalay Bay Resort Shooting through donations, memorials and vigils.

Planned additional attacks

The weekend of September 23, 2017, Paddock had rented a high-rise condo in a building that overlooked the Life Is Beautiful music festival featuring Chance the Rapper, Muse, Lorde, and Blink-182. [88] [87] [90]

Paddock also booked a room at the Blackstone hotel in the first week of August, during the Lollapalooza festival in Grant Park. The hotel on S. Michigan Ave. is located right across from the park. [88] [87] [90]

A second room was booked for August 3, 2017, and both rooms had an August 6, 2017 checkout, when Lollapalooza ended. Investigators also believe he may have scouted locations in Boston, Massachusetts. [88] [87] [90]

A federal official stated that authorities are looking into the possibility Paddock also planned a car bombing. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. [90] [88][87]

I find it strange the police could pronounce the tragedy as not being 'terrorism' in so short a time.

When you begin posting information of this quality
How do you expect people to view you with any credibility
There are so many variables that have still not been explained
I have read one article that says Steven Paddock took his own life and another stipulating he was shoot and killed by law enforcement

Facts over egos is what matters

You're on point. The sheriff just repeated again that Paddock was dead as they entered the room. The FBI ruled out Marilou Danley as being a participant because she called them from outside the country...People need to quit posting what they'd like to see and start printing facts...

I like how the disinformation campaign has begun.  There is a link here to Antifa which is nothing more than a screenshot of a social media post.  What about entire published articles, like this one?

"ISIS takes credit for Las Vegas mass shooting. Here’s what they said." http://www.theblaze.com/news/2017/10/02/isis-takes-credit-for-las-vegas-mass-shooting-heres-what-they-said/

They put in the motive it's possible he was a republican because he was a gun owner and white, ok so why would he choose this venue filled with white people at a country music concert that would be filled with more pro flag American republican people. The rush to judgment or assume anything while people are still fighting for their lives and others grieving is just shameful. He was a nut job just like the black guy who shot and killed and wounded people at the church in Tennessee but hardly got any news coverage.

The whole family seems to be troubled. This is a video of Eric’s son who currently is a choir director at a church in MI. Another brother has a long rap sheet, Bruce. Only brother Patrick is currently silent.
I remember seeing their father’s FBI poster in post office.
It seems they had a bad time as children. I don’t say that as an excuse. There is none.
The shooter video poker player liked to think he was very smart. I am curious is there real evidence he was a millionaire? Seems to me, he was more a scammer and a very sick person. Drinking himself to death. Was Valium only drug they found?
