Following a chance meeting of Smith&Weeden;’s current lineup at SXSW in 2011, the band
recorded a demo EP and put it up for free on Bandcamp.com. After 1000’s of plays and
downloads the band began to play regularly in Providence, RI. They headlined popular
rooms in town (The Met Cafe, The Fete Lounge, The Columbus Theatre) as well as
opening for the likes of Deer Tick, Justin Townes Earle, The Low Anthem, and Joe
Fletcher and The Wrong Reasons.
Spring 2013: Smith&Weeden; scraped together the money for 6 days in the Low Anthem’s
Studio, located at The Columbus Theatre in Providence, RI. They recorded a 10 track album
produced by The Low Anthem’s Ben Knox Miller and Jerey Prystowski. The band continued
to play on the New England circuit for the rest of the year.
Spring 2014: Smith&Weeden; began a crowdsourcing campaign on Kickstarter and exceeded
fundraising goal, with help from donors around the country and even the world. With the
money they raised they hired nationally acclaimed sound engineers Keith Souza and Seth
Manchester at Machines With Magnets to mix and master the album. With help from several
local artists and photographers they put together an album of which they are extremely proud.
Smith&Weeden;’s debut LP is a mix of Rock n’ Roll songs (a la 70’s Stones, Thin Lizzy) and
heartbreaking acoustic numbers (a la John Prine, Willie Nelson). Between revamping a few songs
from the demo EP and recording new crowd favorites from the following year, this album is a
strong showcase of the band’s abilities to wind powerful harmonies, honest lyrics, screaming guitar
solos, and solid rhythms into one amazing record.
