S&P Global Platts is a provider of energy and commodities information and a source of benchmark price assessments in the physical energy markets. S&P Global Platts was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1909 by Warren C. Platt (1883–1963).
S&P Global Platts and Argus Media are recognised as two most significant price reporting agencies for the oil market.
From an original focus on the oil industry, S&P Global Platts gradually expanded its purview to include metals, shipping, and all energy-related markets – oil, coal, natural gas, electricity, nuclear power, petrochemicals, renewables, and emissions.
S&P Global Platts is a division of S&P Global, Inc., (NYSE: ), a provider of ratings, benchmarks and analytics to the global capital and commodity markets. The firm is sister to brands like S&P Global Ratings, S&P Global Market Intelligence and S&P Dow Jones Indices. S&P Global Platts was acquired by S&P Global (formerly known as McGraw Hill Financial) in 1953.
In 2000 S&P Global merged S&P Global Platts with additional like assets to turn the company into a provider of energy information. It is part of the commodity information and analytics group of S&P Global. Since 2013, the company has held an annual Platts Global Metals Awards, modelled on the Platts Global Energy Awards. In 2015, these were held in London.
