On December 15, 2016, a Mount Vernon Police Department officer was shot and wounded in a standoff with a gunman in Mount Vernon, Washington and was airlifted to Skagit Valley Hospital in critical condition.  
The area closed includes from East College Way south to about a block past Fir Street, and from 18th Street east to about 30th street.
The gunman has barricaded himself inside the house and has an undetermined number of hostages.  Hostage negotiators have been trying to talk to the gunman. But the gunman has fired multiple rounds at the officers. 
The officer shot is married with three children.
