Mike was born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut to parents Bob and Barbara Casey. His parents had always listened to Jazz in the household, and it wasn't until Mike was in 5th grade that he wanted to learn how to play an instrument. At first, his interest was in playing the Drums, but Barbara said it would be too loud. So he chose to learn how to play the Sax instead, and little did Barbara know that once he would master the instrument, it would be very loud.
He attended Edwin O. Smith High School, and later on was accepted to attend Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts where he improved his knowledge on Jazz and music. He would often play at Hartford night clubs when he was only a junior in high school.
He had been selected to be a part of the prestigious 2 week, "Betty Carter Jazz Ahead", program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. He learned from many Jazz artists.
