Marquis Luxama (born March 1, 1993) is a Haitian American hip hop recording artist from Elizabeth, NJ. He has released his most recent album “Raising the Bar” on March 1, 2015.

Marquis was born in Elizabeth, NJ on March 1, 1993. Both parents are of Haitian descent. He grew up in Roselle, NJ in a single parent household with his mother and grandmother after his dad left at the age of four. His mother struggled balancing her school priorities and work in order to raise the young star. Growing up in an urban community, he worked to avoid falling victim to the street life and now uses his personal experiences to tell stories in his lyrics. At the age of 15, Marquis ran into trouble with the law and was sent to Haverhill, Massachusetts with relatives.

Marquis started rapping in 2007, when he moved to Massachusetts and was exposed to recording studios by a close friend where he observed the writing and recording process. He coined the name “Jersey Boy” from his classmates since he had a Jersey upbringing. He originally favored singing because he was apart of the church choir in Elizabeth, NJ, but he eventually took up an interest in both singing and rapping. He grew up listening to hip-hop because his parents always played it in their household. A few of his favorite artists include Nas, Common, Rakim, Kanye West, Jaheim, Drake, Joe Budden, R Kelly, Fabolous, J-Cole, Jay Z, Kanye West, Biggie and Tupac.

As a novice, his biggest setback was not believing in himself as an artist which led to a lot procrastination but once he completed his first song he gained a sense of confidence, this fostered his hunger to write more. His first freestyle was a cover of Nas’s record “It Ain't Hard to Tell.” He recorded his first song in 2007, titled “Impossible” at the age of 15 and many songs came to follow. He developed a following by distributing CDs to his peers, posting YouTube videos and promoting his music through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Soundcloud etc. He describes his work as a mix of Hip Hop and a dash of R&B.He has a generous amount of slow jams for women, as well as, tracks to vibe to and club anthems. As an adolescent he dreamed of being a basketball player but was shut down after being rejected for a spot on the varsity basketball team in high school. Music became his main focus once he turned 18 next to graduating high school.

“Ive been working on my craft for many years and, it has helped me acquire my own original sound which I plan to take the game by storm with.” said Marquis.

He has performed in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New Jersey. After countless recorded tracks and studio sessions, Marquis met up with producer Star Select (Roodelson Dumas) and began to work on several tracks for his first production titled “Destined for Fame ” which was later released on November 9th 2012. Now they’re back at with at it with “Raising The Bar” which was released March 1st 2015. He is currently touring New England and the Tri-State area. Among all the other triumphs, he is now the CEO of independent record label, Above All Entertainment LLC and has sold music worldwide. [+]
